In 2000, Art Costa and Bena Kallick published Discovering and Exploring Habits of Mind, and presented their 16 Habits of Mind which transcend all disciplines.

According to Costa and Kallick, they are characteristic of peak performers, whether in homes, schools, athletic fields, organizations, the military, governments, churches, or corporations. They are what make marriages successful, learning continual, workplaces productive, and democracies enduring. The goal of education therefore should be to support others and ourselves in liberating, developing, and habituating these Habits of Mind more fully.

But how do we incorporate them into our teaching so that students can learn to engage with them effectively while learning what we need to teach them?

Charles Duhigg, the author of The Power of Habit, gives us a framework for creating good habits and reshaping bad habits into good ones. James Anderson, in The Agile Learner, provides five dimensions of growth for the Habits of Mind, pointing us toward how to foster them in our students.

This workshop will describe how to combine these ideas together to facilitate the development of Habits of Mind in our students so they become more powerful learners. The presenter will share examples of prompts that guide students toward choosing the appropriate Habits for a learning situation as well as prompts that lead students to the strategies involved in applying the Habits.

Participants will work in groups to develop their own prompts specific to their students’ needs. The workshop will culminate with a sharing of the prompts developed by the participants.
