An Intensive Training Course for Learning to Teach Online

The Online Teaching and Learning Academy (OTLA) is an intensive 9-week online course for those interested in designing and facilitating pedagogically sound online or hybrid courses. This series will address:

  • Learning theory as it pertains to online learning environments
  • Best practices for online course design
  • Employment of Backward Design principles
  • Online assessment strategies
  • Regular and effective contact
  • ADA accessibility
  • OEI Rubric Alignment
  • Appropriate use of online tools
  • Online Instructor Presence
  • Collaborative online environments

The summer session of this course will be fully online and facilitated by a local faculty member. You will work asynchronously on your projects and will be required to meet assignment deadlines each week.

Required Skills 

  • Basic computer skills including:
    • word processing
    • email
    • file management
  • Basic internet skills including:
    • use of browsers
    • search engines
    • uploading/downloading files
  • Use of Canvas including use of the following tools:
    • Modules
    • Content Pages (and the associated Rich Content Editor)
    • Files
    • Discussion Boards

Recommended Skills

  • Familiarity working with multimedia files
  • Familiarity with online discussion forums
