"I hate math!"
"I'm not a math person."
"I can't do math."
These are the kinds of things we routinely hear from our students, and that many of us may feel ourselves. Research shows that these kinds of attitudes can be contagious - if we have negative feelings about math in general or about our math abilities, those attitudes can spread to our students and negatively affect their performance in math classes.
In this workshop, we will spend time:
- identifying our own attitudes towards math
- exploring where those attitudes came from
- experimenting with reframing our negative math attitudes from a more positive, growth-oriented perspective
- addressing how to respond when students or colleagues express negative or self-deprecating math attitudes
