The Library collaborates with faculty to support the research and information needs of programs and disciplines. We offer a variety of services to support our faculty and student success.
As a faculty member, you are invited to work with a librarian to integrate library research and information competency into your class. Flexible library instruction is designed to be compatible with your course modalities. You can request any combination of the following:
- A hands-on library instruction session for your class, either in-person or via Zoom. The session occurs during your regular class meeting time and you are present during the session. In-person sessions are typically held on the 2nd floor of the SCC Library, but can be offered at the Davis Center or West Sacramento Center as well. Please allow about 2 weeks lead time for synchronous and on-ground sessions.
- A librarian can participate in your Canvas course via Discussions and Canvas Inbox.
- A librarian can support your students' research needs by creating a research guide for your course-specific assignment(s).
Library instruction is most valuable when integrated with a course assignment, such as a research paper. Sessions cover topics such as refining search terms, locating books, e-books, journals and newspaper articles, best practices when using the internet for research, or a topic of your choosing.
Assign PILOT Tutorials
The Path to Information Literacy Online Tutorials (PILOT) is a self-paced, six-module Canvas course covering different aspects of the academic research process. The modules can be assigned individually to correspond with your course objectives. After successfully completing each module quiz, students request and receive certificates of completion via email. For suggestions on how to incorporate PILOT into your Canvas course, see our Library FAQ: How do I assign PILOT to my students?
Textbooks and other high-demand course materials are placed in the Library's Reserve Collection to promote student success. These items have a short loan period to provide access to more students.
Many students depend on library reserves. If you have an extra copy of a textbook or can get one from the publisher, please consider donating or lending it to the library reserve.
To place materials on reserve:
- Complete the Reserve Request Form
- Drop off the completed form and materials at the Circulation Desk, SCC Library 2nd Floor

Didn't find a video that you want in your class? Use our SCC Faculty Video Request Form to request it. Allow 3-4 weeks for a Librarian to research and process your request. Please be aware that some films may not be available for streaming.
SCC Library Streaming Media Purchase Policy
- An instructor may request up to 3 streaming videos or $800 worth of streaming videos (whichever comes first).
- All videos must be required viewing for a course (i.e. can't be optional viewing for students).
- If an instructor wants the library to purchase more than 3 videos (or spend more than $800), he/she/they must make a list of the remaining titles in order of importance and date of use in class.
- The library’s ability to fulfill streaming video requests is subject to availability of the film via established vendors and available funds.
- When licenses expire, the library will not automatically renew them; instructors must submit a new request considering the limitations listed above.
Notes
- Streaming video licenses in most cases expire after one year.
- The cost of each license ranges from $120 to $500.
The library needs your suggestions. When you learn of books or electronic resources that would support your curriculum and help your students accomplish their goals, let us know. Specific requests can be made through your departmental librarian by email, phone, or campus mail.
If students are having trouble finding sources on specific topics or you would like assistance identifying needs for your department, coordinate a meeting with your departmental librarian.

The Library’s Canvas page connects students with vital library resources and is customized to your own class.
If you use Canvas for your course, a Library page is included by default. Here are a few things to know about that page:
- It includes links to any items your course has on reserve. If the Library has items on reserve for your class, you should see a section labeled “Your Textbooks.” Clicking any item there will bring you to the full record where you can find the call number and information about its availability.
- If you have brought your class to the library for a course-integrated library instruction session, and a course guide was created, a link to that guide will appear on this page.
- In certain other cases, other content relevant to your course may appear. For instance, all ENGWR courses will show a link to the Library’s MLA Citation Guide. Nursing courses will show a link to the Ovid database. If you have an idea along these lines for relevant content to show for a particular department, send it to Jeff Karlsen at karlsej@scc.losrios.edu.
- A search box leading to OneSearch allows students to begin exploring Library resources, including book, ebooks, articles and more. In most cases, students who have logged in to Canvas will be automatically given access to library databases, with no need to log in again.
Note: The Library page is programmed to include course-specific content. In order for this to work, the Course Code must be in a standard format; otherwise the page has no way to know which course is being used to access it. You may, however, change the Course Name as desired, with no ill effects on the Library page.
If you have already changed the Course Code and want to change it back, an example of correct format is: SCC Sp19 ENGWR 300 LEC 12345 Smith. When you make changes to these fields, you may need to log out and back in to see them reflected in the course as listed on the Canvas Dashboard.
If you have any questions about Library resources via Canvas or have ideas about how to make the page better, please contact Jeff Karlsen at karlsej@scc.losrios.edu.
